Saint Mary the Virgin Episcopal Church in Pocomoke City has removed its historic steeple as part of an ongoing restoration project, marking a significant milestone in months of planning and preparation. The steeple was substantially damaged in a lightning strike last summer, which led to the decision to remove and replace the structure.
In a post shared Thursday, the church described the removal as a “seamless” process, thanking its team and partners for their work. “Today was a GOOD day!” the church wrote, noting that while it was difficult to say goodbye to the old steeple, the removal went smoothly under clear weather conditions. The church added that a date for installation of the new steeple will be announced in the future.
The steeple removal followed months of prayer, planning, and coordination, according to an earlier announcement from the church. Crews and cranes were on site for the work, and the church confirmed that a new steeple will be built on site and installed in the months ahead.
The church publicly thanked several individuals and organizations for their roles in the project, including Brian Rush, Paul Davis, architect Keith Iott, the Church Pension Group, Sexton Dave Southern, community donors, and the City of Pocomoke for their support.
Saint Mary the Virgin Episcopal Church encouraged those wishing to support the restoration of the historic parish to visit its website at stmaryspocomoke.org and make a donation. The church also noted that additional photos and videos documenting the project will be shared in the coming days.
